Hello, dear friends and newcomers. My name is Abigail and I am the sole writer and owner of this blog about my mishaps and misadventures overseas. I am also a teacher, classically trained engineer, intermediate Korean language student, amateur figure skater, and beef tripe aficionado. In addition to my many metaphorical hats, I also collect berets.

Thailand is in many ways unlike east Asia. It’s Thailand is in many ways unlike east Asia. It’s the first Asian country I’ve been to where if I smile at a stranger, they automatically smile back. Being friendly goes a long way here, something that tourists from barter-heavy countries have trouble adapting to.

Towards the end of the week, I made yet another accidental journey where I decided to walk when I shouldn’t have. After miles of trudging alongside a highway with no sidewalk in 90 degree weather, I stopped by a roadside restaurant to ask for water.

I woke up a woman from her nap with a สวัสดี ค่ะ and gestured to my empty water bottle.

“I don’t have a big one but I’ll give you a small one,” I assumed she said in Thai.

I brought out my wallet to pay and she waved it away. Maybe my sweaty face caused her pity, but I thanked her profusely before resuming the trek.

Thai people are so lovely.

Ask yourself: what is the best I can do? And then do that.
