March 7, Emart Madness
I stayed up late to finish “Crash Landing on You” and then even later to cry my eyes out. See, I do have an emotion! When I woke up this morning the finale came back to me and I was sad all over again. I think it’s especially effecting because I just started volunteering with North Koreans and a life where the “Montagues & Capulets” really exist and likely will for some time is crushing. I read some silly internet things to make me feel better and was struck with a craving for bagels. And since my quarter sized kitchen is empty, an Emart trip was in order. The streets…

Huzzah! The Seoul Office of Education has finally taken pity on its foreign teachers and decreed that we only have to work four days of the next two weeks, days to be determined by the school. I didn’t know this until C popped in around noon to share the good news. At first I naively believed that the VP finally got tired of my pitiable form drifting through the empty school hallways like a ghost. But twas the government that surprisingly decided so. C needed to use my computer to log my “telecommuting” days but coulnd’t because my computer came from the dinosaur days. I didn’t have to say anything…

Let’s sort today into “almosts” and “alls”. Almosts: I’ve almost lost ten pounds since moving to Korea. With the comments I get about my face looking smaller and smaller, I assume most of it is from my head. I needed to make a scan and after asking for assistance, the head teacher slid up next to me and said “biscuits” then deposited a stack of individually wrapped crackers in my hand. These would become my lunch. An almost lunch. S almost got me “work from home time” because she’s the real MVP. Almost. Request denied by the VP again so I will continue trekking to school. But at least I…

Don't trust drunken promises, or the office staff, or drunken promises from the office staff. Also, coronavirus sucks.

Last Day of Winter Vacation
This winter vacation has been… Boring. There. I said it! I hate to be ungrateful or even admit to boredom since I’m In A Foreign Country! Having New Experiences! But the virus, endless schedule changes, restricted travel, and winter pollution have made for a vacation that was much less exciting than I imagined. So to commemorate this final day, let’s reminisce about the good things I was able to do: Ask the market sellers in Sokcho about the price of sea cucumber and take some very travel worthy photos Eat 물회 in Gangneung much to the shock of the locals Be a photographer for a Korean family without them having…

Last Saturday of Winter Vacation
A friend and I spent a delightful afternoon indulging ourselves at a famous strawberry buffet in a place fancier than I could normally afford. After much self coaxing, I rolled myself to the gym still wearing full make up from my strawberry themed outfit. Of course the trainer who I once asked to find my sports bra was there and his shirt was distractingly low cut. Not one of the standard gym uniforms that the rest of us plebeians wear. Unsettling encounters with men would not end there, however. I decided to take a more leisurely bus ride home and while wearing a mask and sitting in the same seats,…
